Stayin' Secure and Successful: 5 Digital Safety Tips for NFSW Creators
March 1, 2023
In need of a digital checkup?
When it comes to digital safety, the SW community is actually AHEAD of the game. We’re more likely to be up on the latest privacy technologies, password protectors, burner phone apps, you name it – because we have to be!
But just in case you’re slippin on a few things…we put together a little list with some simple reminders, tips, and resources, you can use to help protect your online identity and take control of your privacy 🔐 so you can put it all out there, without putting it ALL out there!
Don’t drop the addy!
Turn off geotagging and location sharing when shooting or posting. Most apps cache your IP address and can reveal your location, even if you’re not actively using them.
To turn off your phone’s location in iPhone:
Go to Settings > Privacy & Security, then select Location Services.
Select an app, then turn Precise Location on or off.
For Android:
Open your phone's Settings app.
Under "Personal," tap Location access.
At the top of the screen, turn Access to my location on or off. When location access is on, pick either or both of:
Fake it till you make it.
Keep your IRL identity on lock by using a throwaway email address and phone number.
There are awesome services out there that help you mask your email address by generating a temporary one for you. Here’s a few we recommend:
Cloaked, Maildrop, SimpleLogin from Proton mail!
Use strong passwords, password managers, and two-factor authentication.
Resist the urge to re-use your passwords on multiple sites. Hackers and bad actors are much more likely to guess it or unlock it via “brute force” methods (running software to test a bunch of random combinations) if your password is less than 10 characters.
Having a hard time coming up with your own? Use a password generator like StrongPasswordGenerator.org or a password manager app like NordPass, Bitwarden, or Dashlane.
Two factor authentication (2FA) also helps protect your account by making sure its actually you when you’re logging into your account by texting you a code or login link!
Almost all social media apps (Instagram, OF, Fansly, Twitter) have an option for 2FA, but right now its considered “optional.”
Extra tip: If you can, use an authenticator app like Authy for your 2FA instead! It’s much more secure than being texted a verification code.
Cover that cam!
An oldie but a goodie! Not actively using your webcam? Turn it off or cover it up. You can invest in a fancy cover but, tape works just as well.
Go incognito.
Fans don’t get the good stuff for free and neither should these tech companies.
Browse the web privately so you can keep more of your personal info and online activity hidden from any prying eyes. Plus, it stops those annoying ads from coming your way.
Incognito windows are a good start, but they’re not perfect. Want to really protect your traffic and browsing history? Invest in a good secure VPN (Virtual Private Network) that can encode your browsing information and help hide data like credit card numbers and trackers.
Now, if you don’t mind the ads, but just wanna make a little extra money from watching them, there are plenty of options to help you monetize your time online. Private browsers like Brave Browser lets you Earn crypto tokens for your attention by opting in to privacy-preserving, first-party ads.
