What Are Your Nudes Saying About You?

Mar 15, 2023

You may or may not already know, but your NSFW pictures have your information written all over it in tiny text somewhere. This can be scary, but we’re here to help you find out what info you might be revealing so you can feel safer sending your pictures 🙌

So what is this tiny text? Image metadata is text information about an image file that is typically embedded into the file. To simplify this further, there are often three main categories of metadata!

  1. Technical metadata is automatically generated data about the camera/photo’s settings (resolution, aperture, brand, model, date, etc.)

  2. Descriptive metadata is typically added using software and usually includes names of the creator, keywords, captions, titles, comments, etc. Descriptive metadata makes it easier to search for images online!

  3. Administrative metadata is mostly added manually through software and includes usage and licensing rights, restrictions, contact information, etc.

There are also four main formats that metadata takes on!

  1. Exchangeable image files (EXIF) is used in digital cameras, smartphones, and other devices. This is what your pictures will likely have! It typically includes info like width, height, aperture, camera model, etc.

  2. Information Interchange Model (IIM) allows you to add details in images like titles, genres, copyright attributions, location, contact information, etc.

  3. International Color Consortium (ICC) has details about the color profile embedded in an image. FYI: ICC is an organization that defines/publishes open standards for image color management!

  4. Extensible Metadata Platform (XMP) is an XML-based format created by Adobe that is now an ISO standard and it can incorporate both EXIF and IIM metadata.

Now that you’re aware of the different types and formats of metadata, you can safely send your NSFW content by wiping this information and protecting your identity!
